Abraham

This is my poor ram, Abraham. About 4 days ago, I noticed him laying by himself. So I checked him and found his jaw so huge. I knew right away it was bottle jaw. Those darn Barber Pole worms were back and with a vengeance.

So I ran in the house and got my RX kit. I gave hime some Dectomaz wormer, Red cell, a shot each of Thiamin and B complex. Did that the next day too. Yesterday, gave him Cydectin with the shots and Red Cell. Yesterday afternoon, gave him 6 cc of Valbazen. This morning, more Dectomax. And some LA200 antibiotic. I guess I should have given him that the past few days too.

This is him this afternoon. Not much difference at all from 4 days ago. He lays in this corner sometimes and eats dirt. I give them all a loose organic mineral and Thorvin kelp. Last spring I lost my favorite ewe Lucinda, to this same thing. I thought I had a handle on it this time. I have been rotating pastures and cutting the grass a few days later. Until this, they have all been just fine.

But he is a Finn ram. And this dark color. Lucinda looked exactly like him. I have more worm problems with the Finn sheep than the hair sheep. I don't know if it's this particular breed or the color. But all the white sheep are fine. I just hope he makes it.

Any thoughts or advice for me? What else should I be doing? I am doing what the vet told me to do last year. So no, I haven't called him.And Dectomax is what he said will kill these Barber Pole worms.

I had one ewe last fall that looked like that, took her picture, gave her one dose of Ivomec Sheep Drench, and took another picture 2 days later, jaw was back to normal, I was going to email you pictures but could not find contact or your email address.

It's outbackfarm@gmail.com.

I'm hoping he pulls through this. I gave him some brown sugar and molasses water awhile ago and he drank about half. Then towards evening, he got up and drank some fresh cold well water and went out with the rest of the flock.

I cleaned out both stalls and put down fresh pine shavings and raked up all the poop I saw in their yard.

Kris,
Sorry to hear about your Ram!

I hope he pulls through.

Sandra, what would you do in this situation? I gave him some Ivermec this morning. Am I giving him too much worm meds? I also gave him another shot of LA200. I think I'll stop the worm meds for a day or 2 and see what happens. But I'll continue with the other things. I moved all the sheep next door but Abraham stayed put. Maybe he'll go later.

Poor Abraham. With the horribly wet spring everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. Hope he turns around soon.

Correction--Spring AND summer! Hoping these few dry days will help everything turn around.

I'm so sorry, Kris. Onyx is still recovering from her brush with bottle jaw. I don't know much for sheep, but I gave her Ivomec. 10 and 20 days later I gave her doses Cydectin. She still looks a bit emaciated, but is getting better. She is back over a quart a day at morning milking- she'd dropped to next to nothing. It's amazing how fast these worms can drag them down.

Kristin, I gave him Ivomec this morning. I think I'll lay off the worm meds and see what happens. I thought he was dead when I got home awhile ago. He was laying down and I called his name but I didn't see any movement. But he's up again! All the other sheep are next door but he stayed. He seems ok with this.

And I saw a lot of really runny poop where he was. So maybe that's all the dead worms leaving?

Betty Ann, it has been wet and nasty here too. But we actually haven't had rain since last Tuesday I think. So it's getting pretty dry. And Abraham hates the heat. He doesn't tolerate it well. So I think that's why he gets the worms. He has a little knot under his jaw tonight. But still very slow.
