Guess what woke me up this morning?
Let me say, that in all the years I have had dogs, I have never had this happen. And I am 55. And I have lived in the country most of those 55 years. But I have never had this happen. It's probably come close a few more times than I'd like. But never like this. And it's really something you just cannot describe unless you're just right there.
So this morning, I wake up to the most awful, horrid smell. My daughter gets up around 5 am to get ready for work and usually makes something for breakfast. So I thought it must have been her in the kitchen and something had gone terribly wrong. I mean, it smelled like someone was roasting the most rotten onions and garlic. But even worse than that.
So I got up and Stella walked past me soaking wet. It brushed my legs. Then heather said it wasn't her fault, that she didn't know the gate was open when she let them out. And they came in smelling like that. But when I went outside, it didn't smell like that. My kitchen does. And after not even a whole day of Stella being so nice and clean and shiny.
Apparently, they got in a fight with a skunk. And of course the skunk won this one. It's not so much Stella. But Bubba must have been the instigator because he will never be coming back in this house again! I have no idea what to do with him now. He is disgusting. And I think the skunk is under my house near the kitchen. And it could be either hurt really bad or dead. Or not.
So what's a girl supposed to do? Why, cook up some good bacon and make a bacon and fresh ripe tomato sandwich on sourdough bread, of course! I seem to not have any good smelling candles on hand. I will be making some though, when I am done. So now the house smells pretty much like bacon. And who wouldn't want their house to smell like bacon? I bought a few tomatoes at the market yesterday and looked all over for bacon, but they were all sold out. So went to Whole Foods and got some. This is my all time favorite sandwich. And I wait a long time for "real" tomatoes just for this sandwich. I feel a little better. But still, have no idea what to do with Bubba. Stella is pretty much ok I think. But after her nice spa day, it kind of makes me sick.
Any advice for a dog with really thick fur to get the stench out? I asked the shearer guy if he could shave Bubba when he comes tomorrow. I'll check and see if he can. But maybe not now.
And I have a house full of company coming up from Colorado tomorrow for a week. 6 extra people. Staying here. UGH!

I have always heard tomato juice is the best thing to take out skunk. The bacon was an excellent idea though :)
Tomato juice , though commonly thought to remove the skunk door, doesn't work. It is best not to wait because the longer the scent remains, the harder it is to get out. The best solution I've used is to mix 1quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a teaspoon or two of Palmolive dish soap. It will fizz. Bathe your dog in this solution being very careful to keep out of her eyes. Leave on a good five minutes. Rinse thoroughly. If door remains, repeat. Be sure to dry you pup well. Hope this helps. One of mine got sprayed once and this helped tremendously though time is of the essence. You vet probably sells "skunk off" too.
I got several suggestions when my dogs got skunked but Dollar just ended up spending first night on the porch, she did not get it as bad as the other 2 dogs.

Hahaha. This one made me laugh. So typical of a dog. When we give our little indoor dogs their baths. They roll first thing when we let them outside. Or they will hunt down a dead bug on the floor, and try to rub it all over their neck.
Wanna know what we got woke up recently to? A dog screaming outside our bedroom windows at 6:30 in the AM. Scared us half to death. I ran to the window and it was two of our two neighbors dogs from oposite ends of the road stuck together. Yes. Thats right. They though our yard is the neighborhood hook up! Oh was my Mom mad. She doesn't get to go to sleep till about 3 in the morning. The female dog is a shitzu or something like that and the male was a heeler. They are going to make very ugly dogs. I'm really irratated with the people that own the shitzu because they think their dogs have the right to basically live in the road if they like, and since they don't keep their dogs home she keeps producing mutt puppies with the neighbors dogs. We are the only ones that won't let her get to our male dogs, even though she is in our yard teasing them.
I guess I needed to let a little steam off. Sorry. I'll get off my soap box now.

I know what you mean, Kimberly. All my dogs get fixed. And cats.
Bubba smells great now! Not like skunk at all. And I only washed him that one time yesterday morning. I'm going to wash Stella now. She's a bit skunky still. And goodness knows, I have 5 qts of peroxide and a huge box of baking soda. But I use it all the time for cleaning.
But ht's a lot better today! Thanks for all the great advice. That's why I post about things like this. I know I'll get the help I need. And I did.
Ahh poor dogs, and poor you!
My mom had a skunk come through her doggy door- the dog didnt appreciate it, her house smelled for a long time as well as her dog. No fun!
Oh no! That would be worse than what just happened here. When I was a kid a skunk got in our garage and my dad shot it! It was awful.
Bubba didn't need another bath. He smells great right now. And I washed both collars. Gave Stella a bath this morning and she's much better now. I also put flea oil on them both.
I also washed the floor in the kitchen with that same solution. And the collars too. I don't even smell skunk now. That stuff is amazing. I bought 5 qts of peroxide so I'll be ready for the next time.
